Structure of Armed Forces


Army

Command: 2 to 3 Corps make a command. It is commanded by Lt. General. Chief of Army Staff is designated from one of the Lt. Generals and vice army chief of 5 Commands.

Corp: 3 fighter divisions comprising Tanks, ammunition, Military engineering Unit besides medical regiment usually have 100,000 army men.

Division: It is the largest striking force in the amy. Each Division id headed by [General Officer Commanding GOC] in the rank of Major General. It usually consists of 15,000 combat troops and 8,000 support elements. Currently, the Indian Army has 37 Divisions. Each Division is composed of several Brigades.

Brigade: A Brigade generally consists of around 3,000combat troops with supporting elements. An Infantry Brigade usually has 3 infantry Battalions along with various Support Arms & Services. It is headed by a Brigadier.

Battalion: A Battalion is commanded by a Colonel and is the Infantry's main fighting unit. It consists of more than 900 combat personnel. Three Companies make a Battalion.

Company: It is a group of 3 or 4 Platoons, a Company comprises 120 soldiers. It is headed by the Major.

Platoon: An intermediate between a company and Section, a platoon is headed by a Lieutenant or depending on the availability of Commissioned Officers, a Junior Commissioned Officer, with the rank of Subedar or Naib-Subedar. It has a total strength of about 32 troops.

Section: Smallest military outfit with a strength of 10 personnel. Commanded by a Non-commissioned officer of the rank of Havildar Major or Sergeant major

Air force

Wings: A formation intermediate between a Command and a Squadrons. It generally consists of 2 or 3 IAF Squadrons and Helicopter Units, along with Forward Base Support Units (FBSU). In all, about 47 Wings and 19 FBSU's make up the IAF. Wings are commanded by a Group Captain.

Squadrons: Are the field units and formations attached to static locations. All fighter squadrons are headed by a Commanding Officer with the rank of  Wing Commander. A flying Squadron is a sub-unit of an air force station which carries out the primary task of the IAF.

Flights: Are sub-divisions of  Squadrons, commanded by a Squadron Leader. Within this formation structure, IAF has several services branches for day-to-day operations.
